Terrible example. A better one would be Schlock Mercenary, which has been updating daily (without fail) for nearly fourteen years. The secret to its success (besides the fact that Mr. Taylor is a superb storyteller) is that the story is presented in arcs, which tell a self-contained story and rarely last longer than a year. Undercurrents, themes, and plotlines connect arcs, slowly building toward what appears to be looming civil war. But those undercurrents don't dictate the plot, so there's always room for Tagon's Toughs to step back and tackle smaller objectives. Today, they'll shatter a galaxy-spanning cartel and defuse a bomb that would obliterate the Milky Way galaxy, but tomorrow they'll be policing a historic space station and shopping for a new warship.

Another part of the recipe is characters, both protagonists and antagonists. Being a mercenary company, Tagon's Toughs have a plethora of members, allies, and enemies who can step in and out of the limelight. Characters are dumped into new and uncomfortable situations, but they adapt and grow because of it, and they always find room to tell a joke.
