There are 56 of them on the map, but the script seems to check only 00-34. They're not placed in order, but I went from one to the other using their coordinates and all of those were in that first area. The script for checking their health starts as soon as the last reinforcements in that area arive (the brute and grunts at the top of the path past the hunters and the un-assembled AA turret), and as soon as you load the next area it runs a command that kills the egg if it didn't find them destroyed yet. The only thing I can think of as for why I haven't been able to get it to work again is that there's some other condition that causes that 'fail' command to run, and I can't pinpoint it.

The annoying thing is that you can't check if it worked or not until you kill the scarab, and see if the egg appears or not (it should show up after the dialogue about seeing the explosion from orbit and new infantry on the tower etc.) The location is in that area too, the camera angle threw me off of noticing where it was at first too, you'll be able to find it I bet.

Since it worked one of the first times I tried it, I thought it would be easy enough for someone to destroy all the crystals and get the egg too, and that small clues would be enough. As many times as I've tried it since, that seems less like a viable plan. All I can remember doing is killing all enemies in the first section of the level, and then destroying all the crystals one by one using their coordinates to make sure I didn't miss any.
