God, for anyone who doesn't remember that egg hunt, it was nothing short of a clusterfuck. Any Halo site, be it the official Bungie one or any fan site, was overrun by people hunting for the Megg. The initial Megg thread here has to be one of the top 5 largest threads ever. There was a banner put on top of the page to direct people to the Megg discussion to try and keep things organized. Eventually everyone got filtered over to Subnova where there was an entire forum dedicated to talking about it.

It was not enjoyable, and I'm sure Meg almost immediately regretted ever opening her mouth about it. The "clues" were frustratingly cryptic, like "when you see it, you die." How many people spent hours falling to their deaths hoping to see something on a cliff side somewhere? We didn't even know what level it was on for crying out loud.

I'm not even interested in watching something like that unfold, let alone participate in it.

The age of the game is really what's compelling here. I had problems in 2003 with modders finding texture-based easter eggs, but Halo: CE was only two years old at the time. Six years down the road? It should feel like an amazing accomplishment to have discovered something that elusive. This method of announcing it feels incredibly childish.
