Far more asset concepts than environment concepts there... though some of them seem like they have more detail, they do generally feel pretty detail-lacking, at least in geometry. Looks like some of the concepts relied more on the graphic designers creating high detail textures, rather than finding ways to reduce highly complex geometry down to flattened surfaces...
My thoughts? Halo esthetic was just getting started. Either the artists didn't 'envision' the environments nearly as complex and detailed as we see today (more applicable to Forerunner than organic environments), or they knew they had to work within the bounds of hardware capability and designed around that. I dunno. Interesting discussion though.

It would certainly be interesting to see how an official and native release of a Halo 1 map would fare in Halo 5, but I still think it would become 'novelty' right quick.
