But you are forgetting, that at the time the optical compositing tools were light years ahead of what was available years prior! You're forgetting that he WAS working with the most advanced technology at the time that had the fewest limitations!

The problem was that Lucas didn't have Kurtz on Jedi, nor the prequels. Not the technology.
