Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver is like that, and to a lesser degree, Shadow Man. In Sould Reaver, if you lose your health in the material world, you have to go to the spirit world, where you gather the health to return. If you lose your health in the spirit world, you have to go back to the beginning, and then skip back to the most recent portal you've touched.

In Shadow Man, if you die, you return to the place you entered the area you're in, but everything you've killed stays dead and everything you've done stays done.
