Commentary on Canon—A Compromise *PIC*

With infinite debating on the subject of GURPS' worthiness as canon material, I thought, perhaps, a compromise was in order.

I am inclined to believe that one game of Myth is not "more canon" over the other, that all canon material cannot be more than the other. Saying Myth II is more canon that Myth I is rediculous. They're both full interpretations of the same story, each a different point of view of the same or related events, just as witnesses in a trial or writers of historical events. They each have their own oppinions and interpretations of the same material. The contradictions are advents of the writers desiring a different story, however similar they appear. We have even bridged both of these contradiction gaps, such as in recent history, making a more continuitous story. In reality, however, the two sets are different stories, all sets of, presently, five canon materials each different and unique in its own way, all extraordinarily similar.
This, however, brings the danger of pre-release info, as it may, as well, fit into such a definition. However, it is not, because it is not produced material. It is not intended to be any sort of final product. Every game, every manual, however, is fully produced and is meant to be taken as canon. Speculation with it is fine, but it means no more than that.

Seeing as each of the five products, Myth I, the Myth I manual, Tales, Myth II, and the Myth II manual, are all and the only products that were made for us to know as Myth, they are the only ones, as of yet, which are allowed as canon. Each is canon in its own way. We can speculate all we want on “original intent” and “they really mean…”, but those things are never in any way canon; only speculation.
GURPS, unfortunately, does not and can not fit into this. It was never intended as a product for Bungie or by Bungie or anything else that is truly “Myth.” It’s value is odd and very separate from anything oringinally or actually Myth. At best, it could be ranked as pre-release info, simply speculation on the world we are told about in the five said pieces of canon. Its list of counts against it is long, but need not be mentioned here.

Myth III, and the Myth III manual, will be perfectly acceptable continuations of the Myth saga. Since they have all legal rights to it, which includes story by default, it is absolutely the next Myth. There will be seven, hopefully more, canon materials. They are all interlinked as being different interpretations of the same underlieing story. This is a figurative way of putting it. In reality, there is no single or truly unified story of Myth. That is what we make Myth to be, in our minds, and no where else. It is completely intangeable and nonexistant. We will never know the true history of Myth, but we can construct plausible unifications that bring together the seven elements of the story. Only there will we find peace; only there will we find our continuitous Canon.
