Maybe all this 343i stuff is getting to me like fumes in an enclosed space, but could that actually be it? Someone mentioned there were armor pieces before that drew on Sangheili designs, and that character is someone that's worked with them, maybe she went picked a set of pieces (and variants of pieces) that would look less out of place among them or appeal to their tastes more, to make interactions smoother. She could've kept it for possible later Elite interactions or just because the UNSC didn't want to put together a whole second set of armor for one person. Of course, that doesn't really explain why the chest armor looks like a big, liney, metal bra....
