I agree...
Here's an example I just remembered:
Those times in Halo 1 when you're chasing someone and emptying clips, running and gunning, hoping you get them down to the kill in time, and your grip gets tenser because you know they're right on the edge - but they round a corner and you've lost them. Noooooooo! (just as the other player is palms sweating Yesssssssssssssss as they find shelter and safety to recharge)
Perhaps that still happens, but that's an example of the longer, drawn out style of tense encounter that seem to be growing rarer with each Halo iteration.
I'm not sure if "speed" is the property metric, or complexity of the encounter (now there are so many weapons to choose from, a wider variety of strategies to utilize, etc - things which aren't themselves bad things, just different). Again for me it's hard to put a finger on the gameplay issue. It's just the general experience, distinguishing the 'old' from the 'new'. *shrug*
