I think the reason the games like dota and LoL picked up so huge in the eSports community and Twitch and stuff is the same reason Starcraft did. Ultimately it's the ability to see the playing field as a spectator in a way that real sports allow you to and FPS does not. In order to watch an FPS competitively, you switch between different POV cameras and only show from one player's view. In LoL, like Soccer and Football, you can view the whole field and team as a whole and watch it like you would any other sport.
