In Response To: Mac sound on level 2 (Twrch)

: Using the level 2 files (PC) on a Mac, as several people have noticed, yields
: a playable level, but the music is pure static (although you can still
: barely hear the spoken lines).

: I was comparing the level 1 files, and it seems that there are significant
: differences in the .dat files between Mac and PC versions, not at the
: beginning of the file, but nearer the middle. Perhaps an
: "endian" thing? So it seems to me that the data files are not
: completely interchangeable between Mac and PC.

The sound you describe is what you'd get if the embedded music track is in little-endian .wav format in the PC demo .dat file. The Mac version would probably be in big-endian AIFF format (AIFF can actually handle things either way - it's a more flexible format than .wav - but it would save playback time to store the samples big-endian). It's also possible that there's just raw sound data in there (16-bit, 22 or 44kHz little endian) with no header or a custom header, but I find that much less likely.

It *might* work if you can use a hex editor to extract the soundtrack from the beginning of the .wav header to the end of the sound data, use SoundApp or another tool to convert it to a standard AIFF file, and re-embed it in the .dat file. The AIFF and .wav headers will be of different lengths, so whether this works will depend in part on how hardcoded the Oni .dat file format is. The .wav and AIFF header formats are well documented on the net (if you have a Linux or FreeBSD box handy, you can find the magic numbers to begin them in /etc/magic or /usr/share/misc/magic). Another way to find out what they look like would be to generate some new .wav and AIFF files (again, SoundApp will do a good job) and examine them yourself. Then let us know what you find. ;)
