arrogance begats arrogance, i guess. a few days ago i posted a message proposing a petition to get multiplayer in oni. it was obvious that people would disagree with my proposal, so i made sure that i wrote that i knew it was a bleak hope. some people have said that its pointless so close to oni's release, but im not asking for it in oni now. i mean in a patch, in an addon, in a sequel, anything. what i got, when i checked back a few days later, was the biggest argument i have seen so far about oni's multiplayer capabilities. this, in accordance with EVERY online argument i have ever seen, turned into a cable vs dial-up war, with a little bit of console arguing thrown in. what is wrong with you people? first of all, multiplayer in oni IS NOT the same as curing cancer or getting world peace, ok? lets just get that straight right now! you are complaining that it is discrimination to make games that cant be used by dial-ups?!? dial-ups are slower! sugar coating it isnt going to help that, they are a slower connection than broadband! this means that if a game comes out that can only have multiplayer if it has a fast enough connection, so be it. this ALWAYS happens. games began to come out that required a pentium - people complained. games came out that required 3dfx - people complained, but the fact of the matter is that sometimes a game just wont run as well if at all with older or slower hardware. get used to it! thats the way it works! im not sure who the hell it was that was saying that by the logic used, anyone who has a faster car should be able to shoot the people in the slower car in the head, but it was probably Nij, youve been complaining about pretty much everything, so im assuming it was you. ill agree with the response you got for that one, where the hell did you pull that from?!? the analagy that its a public road and that anyone driving too slowly can get killed for it is insane! saying that one game can only be played multi when using broadband or LAN because the game wouldnt run properly without it means just that. nothing else. were not about to go and kill all dial-up modemers are we? if you actually wanted that analagy, you would say that there is a new city called oni, and you need a fast car to be let in. that is not discrimination if the slow cars cant handle the city! it becomes discrimation if there is no difference between connections, but anyone who is convinced that broadband is slower than dial-up is just really goddamn stupid. you can say that broadband is expensive, SO BE IT! faster cars, as a general rule are also more expensive! in a race, the person with the slower car is disadvantaged, and if that was because they couldnt afford a good car, sucked in. that is not the person with the better car's fault! my point is simply this. oni had a shitty time trying to get multiplayer working. they tried and failed, but they had a multiplayer LAN going for a little while, even if it did have problems. the thing is that some of you were saying that its not fair to make multiplayer for broadband and LAN, but not for dial-up. it is obvious that multiplayer over a dial-up connection in oni would be terrible, but the fact here is that people on broadband or using a LAN MIGHT be able to get multiplayer for oni, even if it is a little buggy. if oni were to be released without multiplayer, as we all know it will be, no one can complain about being worse off than another buyer. but say there is a slight chance that multiplayer might be made available, but only for a kickass connection, would all you dial-up modemers out there really be so selfish as to kick up a storm about it? would you all really take the approach that "if i cant have it, no one can?" come on! i think that if people on dial-ups who sit there and bitch about cablers and people on DSLs being conceded cant see how bad this is, what makes them think they deserve multiplayer oni? anyway, all i was asking was if you thought i should put up a petition about it. maybe it is hard to do. maybe multiplayer in oni is VERY hard. but its not impossible. at the most it would only be "unfeasable". "Nothing is impossible, it just takes time." i forget which one of you said that, but i agree. even if its not bungie that makes it, even if its not an official release, a patch or an addon that adds multiplayer to oni would rock. i think that, if on nothing else, we can all agree that if oni had proper multiplayer support, it would kickass way more than it already does. maybe the petition wouldn't change a thing? so what? then we can recede back to our computers and finish the single player game again on a harder setting. we should be content with what we have, but if there's a remote chance that we might get something better, shouldn't we at least try? one last thing. to all those of you who sat there arguing about how multiplayer wouldnt work, SCREW YOU! seriously, if you dont think it can be done, sue me! i dont give a fuck, just dont sign the petition. and yes, im looking at you, Nij. it has become obvious that there is at least a little support for the idea of a petition, so i AM going to create one, just give me a day or two. thanks to people like Asaic who actually realised how stupid some of you are being, and for once, Rakki, i agree with you on a lot of points. (by the way this may or may not shock you, but im not a complete anti-piracy freak, i dont really care one way or the other. i was just arguing because i felt like arguing with you) as long as we can agree that multiplayer wouldn't be impossible, but it might have repercussions and arguments by leaving out dial-ups, as long as we can at least agree on that, then im putting up a petition. if you have a problem with anything ive just said, show your disapproval by not signing the petition. thats all. i really dont care what you have to say if you want to post and whinge about me all day. see ya.
