Why did 343GS want to fire the cascade in Halo 1? You only need to fire on the ring itself to contain it. Was he that worried whichever Flood was left would escape?

And what is the worst case, anyway? The Flood escape and consume all life? Without anyone to maintain the Arks library, firing the Halos would kill all life too.
