I don't get this. How can advances in rendering technology result in engines that can't render colors and objects like older engines could?
Let's make one thing clear: it is entirely possible to have the resplendent environments of old in modern games. It is entirely possible to model the Mark VI MJOLNIR and Grunts and Elites and Jackals and Warthogs and Battle Rifles and Forward Unto Dawn as faithful adaptions of what we saw in Halo 2-3. 343i isn't going to do this because it would step on some poor artist's toes and/or go against Microsoft's market research.
