: This idea of the Knights as 'imprisoned and tormented souls' just doesn't sit
: right with me in the context of Halo's universe.

To be fair it's the same as what the Flood does, and it's the whole point about the Prometheans - the Didact's hypocrisy in the use of the Composer, "saving" the Galaxy from a great evil by unleashing the same torment himself.
