How expensive are extra renders really? Play co-op in portal 2, and in split screen mode you can potentially see 32 portals on the screen at once, each with their own render pass. It sounds like portals work similar to reflections, in that what you see through the portal is actually a 2D surface, not actual 3D geometry.

Then again, the source engine is old.
