She has conditioned humans to revere her. She is the Virgin Mary. That isn't subtle.

One thing I liked about the Chief's reaction to her offer of a genetic firmware update was that he was only interested if it was the only way to defeat zeebaddy.

You can look at her betrayal and incarceration of her hubby as setup. She is using him to push the Chief into going down the path she wants.

But it's pretty unsubtle. I know that characters do what the author wants but the author's hand in the story is just too blatant. It doesn't feel like real people behaving according to their nature.

The geas is the author's way of making the characters do whatever he wants because: reasons. (geas made them want to do it).
