Probably my last post on this subject

In Response To: Re: The Head (Again) (Forrest)

All right, everyone's found their perfect theory, and no one's mind is going to be changed any time soon, so I think I'm going to bow out of this argument. I've lost my strength, my hair, and my will to live. Arc can take over if he wants. Here are my final, barely-choked-out comments:

: But in my theory, the Head is [one of?] the being[s] that
: control[s] the cycles, and thus it is his actions
: which make the victory of the light inevitable. If the
: Nine hadn't listened to him, I'm sure something else
: could have been conjured up to insure their victory,
: but giving them some questionable advice which forces
: their actions against the Dark is the path of least
: interferance. Obviously, the cycle-creator[s] could
: just blink, nod, and make the forces of the Dark
: vanish, but that would certainly raise some questions.

I think if the beings that control the cycle didn't want to interfere and raise any questions, they wouldn't have created it in the first place. The Leveler appears from nowhere to possess a hero at the start of the Dark Age; why would it surprise anyone if he disappeared at the end?

: Yes, the Dark forces would be there, but
: without the Leveler they would just be a bunch of
: nasty animals romping around, unorganized and
: succeptible to Light attacks.

I dunno; I recall that up until Shiver's defeat no Fallen Lord had ever been defeated. Yes, Balor made them ten times as dangerous, but I think they could have at least held their own over the ages without him. And without the cycle, not only the Leveler but also the great Light hero of each age would be gone--the Light would be almost as unorganized as the Dark. Actually, Balor was the Dark's greatest weakness as well as its greatest champion, wasn't he? If he hadn't bound the Fallen to himself, his death at Alric's hands wouldn't have neutralized them. It's ironic that the Dark might actually have won if Balor had stepped down and left the scene toward the end of the War.

: They may have believed that the Head was their only hope
: of victory, despite his questionable motives and
: actions. You've been arguing this yourself, that some
: people would want to follow him even after discovering
: his nature. The people attacking the Head could have
: been seen as crazy to them, seeking to destroy their
: only change of survival, and the people defending the
: head wouldn't be rebelling, they'd be the
: "sane" ones trying to save the world.
Yes, I think people would want to follow him even if they knew the truth about him. But I don't think they would want to follow him *after* he double-crossed the Light. If a group of soldiers were going to choose him as their leader, you'd expect to hear about it before he started giving questionable advice. And these are dedicated warriors, remember. The soldiers of the West willingly risk death, agony and mutilation for their commanders (and geeks like us). They wouldn't mutiny unless they had a darn good reason. And it's not like the Head's been out there giving pep talks and courting public favor; from what the narrator says, he pretty much just sits in a roomand talks to the avatara. I don't see how ordinary soldiers would know anything, good or bad, of the Head, except for whatever announcements might come down from the Nine.

Hey everybody, I've posted my second plug-in at the Mill. Inspired by Forest's "Myth That Never Was" article, it allows you to use 6 magic arrows modeled on the arrows from TFL (remember the Bow of Furious Incandescence?) Have a look if you're interested.
