: Do we need to switch our thinking to Xbox as a service or platform instead of a
: console?
: - MacGyver10
I think whether or not gamers have, Microsoft certainly has. Ultimately they know the real money is in services and Gold subs and the like. Hardware is great but it can't have great margins given the price cuts they've been forced to make to keep it competitive, and the R&D costs. Leveraging the more PC-like nature of the consoles and giving people Play Anywhere and 360 BC + XB1 forwards compatibility with Scorpio seems like taking a smart page from Apple's ecosystem integration.
Personally as a Mac guy I'm still going to be running an XB1 as I prefer my shooters with a controller and I prefer the relative ease and low cost of the platform. I suppose it's possible MS is going to hurt XB by having all the games come out for W10 at the same time, but if people are buying their software when they were unlikely to buy an Xbox I think it works out for them.
