Re: Re-read TFoR for First Time in Awhile...

: Forgot about the second one, wouldn't be surprised if the first resurfaces in
: a few years.

: Hey, that information preceded a scene in which AIs were shown to be working
: in close proximity. It's not impossible, there's just some factor that
: makes it difficult or expensive or resource-intensive to do. Maybe
: installing multiple AI in close proximity with unfettered communication
: accelerates the onset of rampancy, or maybe the lines of communication
: that they inevitably set up uses more than double the hardware required
: for a single AI.

: The Kilo 5 novels ended on BB's progenitor writing a note to Parangosky
: saying that Halsey deluded them all into taking the low road and
: Parangosky was the one who kept her morality through all this... I dunno,
: can't remember exactly what the letter said. I couldn't read it without
: feeling the need to yarf.

: A better way to explore the morality of the Spartan II program would have
: been a whole novel not written by Traviss, about the scientists,
: technicians, and ONI personnel working under Halsey. How did they cope
: with the fact that they were raising child soldiers?

The only line that's complimentary to Parangosky is that she was more "human" than Alban, BB's "father", and that he'd put in a good word at the gates (whichever he arrives at) if she honors his last request. He really doesn't say anything about Halsey forcing anyone to go along with it and explicitly mentions the machinery that enabled them, although he says that he doesn't think Halsey ever actually felt that bad about what she did (which TFOR and the rest of the K5 trilogy shows he was wrong about, but that's neither here nor there.) I think you'r letting your distaste for the series cloud your recollections :)

I do agree seeing more of the non-major characters on the Program would be interesting, but at some point any great sci-fi series really needs some sort of "Lower Decks"-esque stories that let you see what life's like for the little guys at these big junctures. I suppose you could say Halo's military scifi roots enable this, but really even if we spend time with some random Grunts it's not quite the same as focusing on their view. I can only really think of some stories like "Midnight in the Heart of Midlothian" that really felt that narrow.
