Turning the sharpness to 0 isn't necessarily a good idea. On a lot of TVs, the "sharpness" filter has equilibrium at 50, with the upper range being a sharpening filter and the lower range being a blur filter.

(Also, it doesn't mean much to say "it's just a filter"; sharpness functions on CRTs are also "a filter," albeit not necessarily a discrete digital filter.)
