Bingo, it would have been too much. Just imagine going in and adjusting the Havok physics engine to get rid of the super jumps.

Wrong, Halo 1 has a lot more issues. The stuff you've mentioned about Halo 2 is actually not game breaking, you can mitigate it with strategy and knowing when people are likely to use the button combos against you and avoiding those circumstances. The exception to this is the super bounce, but even then there are only a few scenarios where that's even useful. Halo 1 on the other hand has issues like being able to reach through walls, several people getting the same power-up, and it's a lot simpler to manipulate the spawning. The back-pack reload alone is a lot more useful than any button combo or weapon combo in H2.
