In Halo 3 they gave you access to various playlists and then started locking them off one-by-one unless you bought additional map packs.
In Halo 4 they had the (North America only) double XP tie-in codes with the Doritos for quicker leveling to rewards that offered largely illusionary advantages, which dissipated almost entirely over time as people simply played more.
