But even if they ditched MC, the game would still be based on Bungie's stuff. Surely they'd need to come up with an original game if they want to really prove something.

I doubt they'd kill MC off though. Even if they did something else for a while - like some kind of offspin series - they could have him still out there somewhere for a potential comeback.
