The latest patch for the MCC seems to have done some good. The game is still buggy, prone to crashing, and is currently in a state where if it were released today we'd say it has "serious, unacceptable issues." But after a couple of nights of playing matchmaking with friends (flat-out impossible at launch) I can say things have improved. As Paddy says, it's currently an MVP: minimum viable product. Partying is hard, replete with random netsplits, disconnects, game session dropping and merging with random people, etc. But if you squint hard enough you can kinda sorta see a working video game.
I repurchased the MCC following the latest patch after my associates described the improvements. I don't think it was the wrong decision. Someone inside 343i is trying to make the game better and I'm thankful for their efforts, but we're not out of the woods yet. Let's remember that this game PURPOSEFULLY had inadequate resources directed toward it, with an abbreviated development schedule and most of the work outsourced to other companies in the interest of making a quick buck. They knew what they wrought. There's absolutely no reason to believe that 343i will continue working to improve this game past Christmas when the returns on such effort start diminishing due to the end the holiday shopping season, the end of the Halo 5's beta, and its looming release.
But despite my cynical, hard, muscular exterior, I'm still prone to dreaming. The MCC at least works to the point where I'm able to gripe about smaller things that I hope can be fixed:
- We need an objective playlist. This one should be easy to accomplish. I'm just getting tired of playing Slayer all the time.
- I don't know what the hell's up with the hit detection in Halo 1 and Halo 2 Classic, but it needs to be fixed. At least a couple of times I've sniped people who were standing dead still, had the game draw blood, but didn't register a hit. Losing battles and occasionally games because of this really sours my appetite to play, which is a damn shame because I love H1 and H2. (Halo 3's hit detection might be bugged too, but I always had problems with the original anyway, so I can't say for sure)
Unfortunately, wonky hit detection is likely due to issues deep within the netcode, which may be difficult-to-impossible for 343i to "patch" without rewriting large swaths of very important code (a tall order even with a fully-stocked development team)
- People have mentioned broken, pre-fix spawns in Halo 3. Does anyone know if 343i has the ability to fix this?
- Fix the damn player emblems in H2 and H3
These gripes aside, I am thankful that I'm now able to operate the MCC in a way that vaguely resembles a video game, and I'm appreciative of the progress. Halo is fun. These sentiments are of course tempered by feelings of anger and betrayal at what got us in this mess in the first place, as they should be. But that's life.
