Oh, it's been setting up a collapse for years. I remember late last gen that we were discussing all of the issues as publishers pushing buttons just to see how far they could get away with things...
But they've already taken it to the next level just in the past few months.
-Day Zero launch for CoD, to get a one-day head start on reviews.
-12 hour post-launch Review embargo from Ubisoft.
-Post release implementation of Microtransactions in games that boasted zero microtransactions from EA (BF4, PvZ:GW).
-Removing Content from the game to advertise it as goodwill DLC (The Witcher 3) before the game even launches.
-Season Passes ($50 for CoD!)
-Preorder bonuses (Buy men's shaving gel for a shirt in Assassin's Creed! Speed Pants! Mountain Dew armor!)
... All that's missing is the freemium lockouts being introduced into AAA games, and we've got a revolution on our hands.
