Wondered that myself right from first seeing the original cutscene. That flesh is not flexible. How did it make complex sounds?
I just dropped it into the realm of telepathy; "hearing" the gravemind's real words while the audible sounds formed by air through a tube and minimal 'mouth' effect would just be gurgly blasts of deep sounds :P Telepathically then it could even 'speak' in whatever language is understood by the listener.
It would just be coincidence then that the mouth motions appeared to echo english words :P
