You know, the last chapter left me halfway excited. It looked like the Didact had finally got some sense kicked into him and was going to drop the Skeletor schtick.
Of course, that meant that the Chief would have had to be saved by the Librarian's space mag-er, Genesong. Built up properly, that plot point could actually work. All the suspense would have to be on "What exactly did she mean by 'Unlocking my true genetic potential?'" and less on "OMG, they killed Chief-y!"
However, the Genesong would have had to live up to said potential. Something that uses Clarke's Third Law ("Any sufficiently advanced science is indistinguishable from magic.") in an honest and interesting way.
For example, if it was some sort of healing factor that cured whatever wounds the Didact could inflict, I would hope they would play it as "The Chief's memories/personality gestalt are backed up into fullerine nanostructures in his bones. If Blue Team can get him back to an autodoc and a decent nutrient source, the newly awakened biological machinery will stitch his body together as good as new."
Instead, such a healing factor (If that's what the Genesong grants) would probably be presented as Wolverine-style "F#6& Thermodynamics!" regeneration.
Meh. Pointless speculation. Didact is still an easily-defeated Bond villain. The Chief's plot armor is so thick, the artist can't even make a pretense of injuring him. Nothing new here.
