I think that is the official explanation, actually. The Mantis (being the HRUNTING/YGGDRASIL Mark IX) stems from the HRUNTING/YGGDRASIL Prototype ADS, which was heavily based on the MJOLNIR Mark I and the HRUNTING Mark III [B] Cyclops.
