Makes me wonder if they really didn't have much in the way of plans for it. Kinect 1 was completely non-fit-for-purpose as a gaming input device, and that was seemingly the justification for a new one; it'll be different this time! But when truly heaving-hitting software to support an extremely expensive bundled component still doesn't exist half a year after launch? Even if it's a cool device, it's insane on a business level.
But as you suggest, the interesting part here is that it also leaves Microsoft with little more than a couple of franchises to distinguish themselves with going forward.
