Spoiler alert.....

Gimli makes a slight cameo. Gloin is being searched by Legolas in Mirkwood (The events of which happening roughly 60 years before the party and I'm guessing around 80 years give or take before the fellowship is formed) and Legolas takes Gloin's picture box with pictures of Gloin's wife and son. Legolas says "Who is this? Some goblin mutant?"
"That's my wee lad Gimli."

Gimli would have been in his 60's or 70's by the that time. Or is he still considered a wee lad at that age?

It was a funny moment but interesting oversight... Who cares though I suppose?
