I don't know if you have a specific reason for wanting to play Halo Combat Evolved PC versus Custom Edition, but you should be able to still download Custom Edition online and then just use your CD key. Plus, all the single player maps were eventually converted, along with the UI.map necessary to load them just like in the original PC version. Unless you specifically want to play on the PC servers versus the CE servers, I can't think of a reason why you wouldn't want to go this route even if your disc wasn't giving you problems.
