my theory is that this age will be one of dark lords rising and opposing the light and causing general havoc and disruption, preventing any real progress and perhaps wearing away and causing regressions.
imagine if someone pops up every 60 years and attacks the light. that's very little time to repair the old damage and prepare to defend against the next enemy... i can imagine alric holding the light together for a while, but he's already an old man. perhaps he could turn to necromancy or other magics to extend his life to defend his realm, then gradually being worn away himself into bitter twistedness and turning into an evil overlord of a fraying empire until the next hero comes along to dispose of the sorry old alric who has probably been posessed at some point by the leveller and done real damage.
