Alric thinks Leveller is gone?

This arguement came up a while back but spread itself amongst several different threads.

"Balor has been killed before," Alric told us after we raised the Myrkridian standard, "and each time it has only made him more powerful. Our best hope is to cut off his head, and hurl it into the Great Devoid. Only in this way will the world be rid of him forever."

Does this mean that Balor has been killed before (must have been earlier during the Wolf Age) or is it implying that the Leveller has been 'killed' before?
If it is Balor who has been killed, I wonder when and how since he was conquering cities most of the time.
If it means the Leveller in general, then Alric obviously knows that the Leveller keep coming back, and thinks he can stop the cycle by throwing Balors (Levellers) head into the Great Devoid (perhaps because it would keep falling forever so the Leveller would never die, meaning it could not escape Balors head).

"...Soulblighter was not The Leveler. He may have been if he had survived into the next millennium ñ but, in his attempt to force the cycle, he perished and almost certainly will suffer at the hands of those who set it in motion. It is even conceivable that because of his actions the cycle has been broken, but we cannot be sure ó at least not for another nine hundred and forty years.
Nine Skull chuckled, saying that with a little luck, he may still be around to see..."

The JMan at the end of Myth II and the journal writer are talking. The JMan seems to think that Alric didn't help by throwing the head in, because he is pondering whether Soulblighter broke the cycle and there is no mention of any other way the cycle may have been broken (Alric).

This probably sounds confusing, so haggis to you!
