If anything, they only put on the pretense of working together only so they could undermine each other. But you're right, nothing is mentioned about SB. We just learn in M2 that he doesn't really like Myrdred that much, but I think that's it.

: mind to think, plan, use magic (which they don't know

It seems likely that there is a presence inside the bodies of Shades (I think of them as either imps [like in TBC], demons, or intelligent dark magics) and these presences share the brain of the former occupant of that body. So they either pretend to be, or actually think they are, the guy to whom the body belonged.

The spiders continue to be an enigma. However, since I believe that the Tain transports you to caverns beneath the ground, it appears that the spiders can walk up through cracks into the top world, get their food, then crawl back deep underground where the queens are, and lay eggs etc.
