I've thought of it like this: Some kind of gate. Guarding it, a Mahir or two. Bloke attracts their attention with a stone's throw (ring a bell? ;) ). Mahir drain life as we know. However, it seems thta they actually cause the victim to simultaneously exist in our world and the realm of the Tain Skyrosh inhabits (p'raps her own pocket universe in a pocket univese?), and she sucks them dry, like spiders do - more like an ancient mummy than a corpse.
