I think the guns are real enough - they have an reasonable excuse for them not to be used in the flavor texts on that level, and even more in GURPS (Dwarves are nearsighted. Same reason they don't use their own cannons). The exploding deer, I think, are simply delusions of drunken peasants who went out hunting.
