It's kind of pointless to speculate. As has been made abundantly clear from the Vice History of Halo piece, Bungie was essentially a locomotive on fire with people sticking track ahead of it a few seconds before it derailed, and it produced all the games we love.

Halo has had bad demos before. Halo has overpromised on graphics and burned later. All this has happened, and will happen again. It doesn't really have much bearing on the final product, or at the very least it's a very loose correlation.
