In Response To: War crimes and Halo (Grizzlei)

: I absolutely agree that LT Haverson executing the Huragok
: "prisoner" on Ascendant Justice was awfully… well, awful. A
: Covenant non-combatant can be contained and even more so on one of their
: own vessels.

How? And how do you contain a Huragok, which is a walking talking lockpick? Yeah, maybe the Covenant do have restraints and prison cells on that ship, but you can bet that the Huragok built them.

Now, let's talk nightmare scenarios. You saw how fast a Huragok learned to repair the Master Cheif's armor. How fast do Huragok disseminate information? There's a couple hundred Huragok on a ship that is not quite secured from the original crew, and the current generation of MJOLNIR contains unspecified improvements on Covenant technology. How long will it be until the specifics of those upgrades spread to the rest of the Huragok? What if the Covenant retake the Ascendant Justice, or if the crew flees with a handy Huragok?

You are in Haverson's shoes. A single Huragok thus far knows the secrets to MJOLNIR armor. Do you really take the risk of letting those secrets fall into Covenant hands, where it will find its way into battle armor and spaceship shielding?

Yet, I'm not shocked as you are by his comrade's general
: reaction to the execution. For them it's likely to be business as usual to
: execute Covenant prisoners of war who are uncooperative and combative, or
: for whom they can't provide basic shelter, sustenance, and healthcare.
: Conduct of the Office of Naval Intelligence thus far proves Haverson's
: actions were well in-keeping with their hyper-violent attitudes and strict
: xenophobia. During the Human-Covenant War, almost acting as political
: officers (which they do), this spreads throughout the United Nations Space
: Command through propaganda efforts by Sections Zero and Two.

: A question must be raised regarding the Geneva Conventions and its
: application within the Unified Earth Government. It's not an adoption by
: the United Nations but merely the world order at the time and continued on
: by state actors as law today. The documents in its original language
: regularly uses terms such as "humanely" and
: "humanitarian", as well as "person(s)." It's common
: knowledge that Humans at this point in the war do not regard any species
: or individuals in Covenant civilization as people. That's easy bait for
: the UEG Senate and the UNSC Security Council to circumvent its adaptation
: with alien species.

Kind of helps that said alien species are neither signatories nor particularly observant of those documents. Honestly, wording of the word "Person" doesn't mean shit when the enemy makes a habit of glassing population centers from orbit. If one side is not going to uphold the laws of war, there's not much reason for the other side to uphold them either. You might remember how America was pressured to ignore the laws of war when dealing with unlawful combatants, and that was when we were winning the war by most measures.

: Now the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, through a later bill, and the
: Mortal Dictata are binding laws in the United Nations. Still, the Covenant
: aren't Human and any lawful specificity can be reinterpreted as only
: permissible for the wellbeing of humans. It could even be denied to the
: Outer Colonies since the UN in theory doesn't have authority over them.
: Ultimately, the Unified Earth Government seems to have entirely abandoned
: or refined and amended many 20th century treatises with then-modern
: thinking.

Consider that the pistols used by the UNSC are all chambered for explosive ammunition.
Now consider how silly certain treaties look to a civilization with advanced medical technology. For example, what's the point of the Protocol on Blinding Laser Weapons if blindness can be corrected with clones eyes and five minutes of surgery? What is chlorine gas to the army that can clone lungs and field cheap vacuum-rated battle armor?
