Here's some reasons the halo franchise failed.

Pandering to money:

The story was heavily interwoven with Christian and Judaic references
From Seraphim, Halo, John 1:17, FLOOD, etc...

Eventually this ORIGINAL line of thought was DERAILED. Like in a conversationo when you start with a certain topic, if you get drunk or ramble on too long - the orignal point you were trying to make becomes lost in translation.
This what happened to Halo after 2. They were rushed to complete in favor of money, and the story was sacrificed for it.

Again, going with the pandering to money -
The gameplay was made simple for the sake of getting players into it.

AUTO melees? Pardon my language but are you FUCKING kidding me?
I understand lag, but I played on XBC just fine.

Manual MELEES FORCE the player to be SKILLED and time their hits. This is REWARDING when you land a great melee by jumping over the back of someone and cracking them in the back

Vehicle destruction was taken out, why?
My guess is that having the wing of the banshee blown off, and thus having it sink to one side (causing the player to adapt) would be MUCH too complicated for kids.

So they just left it as a decal.

The MORE techincal the game is, the MORE rewarding it is when you do something cool.

Being able to dodge a GHOST in halo 1 by DUCKING under the right or left wing?
Epic.

Imagine something as intense as being able to snipe a spartan in a certain part of their armor to deactivate or slow their shield regen. It adds flavor.

Plasma rifle freezing people?
Awesome - added flavor.

The more techincal, the better the game

Think TRIBES 2 or AVP 2

The story was butchered.

Psionics do not fit.
Master chief going toe to toe with a Forerunner general in full battle armor?
No.

I love the chief, but remember the story -

"These walls are perfect, even on the atomic level"

These Forerunner were near transcendental.
The master chief was wearing a HAZMAT suit, at best.

The Forerunner were , at their tech level - untouchable - the story should reflect that.

Too many sci-fi tropes have used the STARGATE method.
