Though it had sticky paths more than gravity 'fields'. I wonder how it was actually implemented in engine.

It did exacerbate the where-are-they-shooting-me-from problem that you face in shooters but it was fun.

With my suggestions I am think of large areas - the ground would be mostly flat but would eventually curve. There has to be a happy medium of size where it works. I don't know if current gen hardware can handle that so a torus might work best but it's the cylinder that I really want. Oh, and the small moon.
