That's a good thing to point out, I completely missed it. I think there was mention of finding his medical records, and if not maybe it was implied in finding out he died. It could be a case where the causes and effects are obvious once you have a critical piece. I can imagine doctors racking their brains, searching every available text, looking for something that would cause whatever was happening with John's clone and the others, and not finding it just because they had no clue to look at the effects of flash-cloning and/or whatever genetic alteration was done, or finding it but assuming that couldn't possibly be the cause in that case and continuing to look for something else.
