I'm ignorant about Windows 8. Is there no way to change that? Because my first gut reaction was to irritatedly start scrounging preferences to turn that nonsense off, and failing that, find a multi monitor utility that knows what it's doing.

There was also the pressing feeling to dump the three Halo images and find something to span all three displays.

Good on you if that's your workflow of choice, but I personally can't stand it. If I'm presented with multiple displays, taskbars need to reflect only what's running on each display, and the background needs to be unified to reflect the fact that, "hey, this is all one desktop".
