: Like how they do comic books and superhero movies?

: Fun fact: Batman killed people and used guns in detective comics :-p

Well, with the appropriate control of the canon and respect for the general gist of things. That being said, while Batman not using guns and Superman having a "no killing rule" are vital parts of their mythos now that fans demand to be followed, I come to wonder what kind of fan shitstorm would have happened had the CCA enacted the "no killing" rule in our day and age...

Anyway, what I meant was on absolutes. Just as fans accepted the earliest retcon of Elites having always been seen in the human-covenant war instead of until the fall of Reach, I come to think, for instance, that not all Spartans think Halsey was a saint or were as easily indoctrinated, that no species of the covenant is uniform, that not all planets were 100% glassed, etc.

As I mentioned, when you get too many hands on a franchise, it's inevitable authors will miss on the canon work of others, such as it happened to Star Wars. But if one treats a canon as utterly ineffable, either as a fan or as an author, there wouldn't be a lot of ground to explore. Even Tolkien had inconsistencies in his Middle Earth, although his was more based on mythology and legends.
