Have you read "The Gun" by CJ Chivers? Really good book on the history of AK pattern rifles. There's a chapter in there on AKs in Africa. They were burying them in ant hills, leaving them for years, then coming back and pulling them out. The rifles still worked without a hitch. They coated them in a little oil, wrapped them in plastic, and stuck them back in the ant hills until the guns were needed.
