I heartily enjoyed it.

In my opinion, if you want a movie made from the novel, then this trilogy isn't for you.

I see more of an 'inspired-by' envisioning of The Hobbit i more of a LOTR-style context. And because of that, it was quite enjoyable - even with the substitutions and additions and modifications and and and... If you watch it for what it is - a trilogy of films leading up to LOTR - I think you'll certainly have fun. If you keep comparing it a picking out what's different and wrong compared to the books, even if the 'theme' has altered, then you may not enjoy it nearly as much.

I love the barrel scene. It was fast-paced, fantastical, gave Legolas his time to really shine, as well as Tauriel who certainly held her own demonstrating her combat tactics compared to Legolas. Yes it had 'silly' moments, but I kept coming back to how skilled hobbits and dwarfs are, which you really don't get by their presentation alone (for example, their running, when Bombur quite unexpectedly ran up and faster than the rest of the 'leaner' dwarfs). The scene was light-hearted, relatively speaking, yet still had that air of danger from the orcs. Granted, the orcs throughout the film felt FAR less dangerous and menacing than in LOTR.

But to me, the 'fun' of the novel really only came out in the presentation factor of the characters; everything else, events and plot and whatnot all felt more like gap-bridging to LOTR, which I liked.

And of course, all of the above is without comparing the film content/plot directly to novel.
Plus, a single novel could, I think, certainly be drawn out into a multiple films. LOTR could itself be MUCH longer. So while LOTR was 'cut' to fit into 3 (lengthy) films, could the Hobbit really fit at most into a single film? *shrug* It's not that much of a stretch (pun!) to think that it could fill a trilogy, especially when creatively 'adapting' it for big screen as a "based-on" story.

Of course, IMO.

Love it or hate it. I'm probably around 7.5/10 :) (though yes of course much less were I weighing its accuracy to the novel much greater)
