Well, subscription-based games existed for a while, but they've been dying off and being replaced by free-to-play stuff. The standard has always been no charge for online MP, though. Sometimes that means that you get free access to official servers, sometimes that means community members are able to host servers, sometimes you're stuck with just peer-to-peer gameplay on a custom games browser. In my experience, even the last model can usually offer better results than typical XBL MM, despite being free.
