How is it hard on the eyes?
: In regard to people disabling captions such as provided by YouTube
: annotation, I don't think the video maker should feel obliged to take any
: account of that.
It's extremely common. A lot of people probably don't remember they even exist because they've had them disabled since they were introduced.
: : With editing, try to hook them early . If you're showing off a trick for
: : example, try showing the trick or the cool result from it up-front. To
: : pique their interest. To get them going 'how did you do that!?' THEN you
: : show them how.
: That's certainly an idea worth mentioning, but on the negative side it's a
: bit like delivering the punchline of a joke in advance. I personally
: wouldn't worry about potentially losing some casual viewers who don't care
: to watch build-up material, but the teaser approach is definitely
: something I might use in special cases.
That's kind of the first rule of entertainment, though-- get their attention, then keep it.
: I think you're missing my point there. If someone elects to have part of the
: functionality disabled - YouTube annotation for example - that's up to
: them, but they also have to take the responsibility for not necessarily
: getting such a good understanding of the content. In the same way, I'm
: pretty sure the makers of a TV documentary wouldn't spend any time
: worrying about what viewers will make of their programme if they've
: elected to watch with the sound turned off. They wouldn't try to fashion
: their footage to compensate - just as I wouldn't with a video designed as
: a captioned product.
He was only saying you shouldn't put essential information in them, though, and I don't know how they do things over there, but over here almost everything shown on TV has captioning embedded in it that you can see if you want to or need to.
