It can be done, SDCC does it. Besides the names on the bades, holograms, barcodes, other security features they don't reveal.(to counter counterfeiting.) There is an RFID chip in it to help identify passes. Security/staff for SDCC have a scanner they each carry at the front door they just wave in your general direction to know if your pass it legit or not.
Not sure how it would work at PAX, but there is an option.
