I have to imagine that it's much cheaper to serve digital downloads (or streams, *barf*) than to master/produce/distribute DVDs/Blurays.

With netbooks and tablets becoming more common place, actually having a disc drive isn't. So there's that too.

There's always the exclusive route as well. Eg, offering something exclusively on Netflix (I believe the new Arrested Development episodes are such)
